Do you think the name Knoss could be Greek?

If so, where can I find information on it? My family has never been able to trace the name, we thought it might be German (ponounced n aw s), but it just came up in my Greek notes (palace at Knossos). If it was Greek it would be K-n-oh-s There is no trace of the name on any of the genealogy websites.

It's more likely the Austrian and Bohemian Knaus...though there was one immigrant from Frankfurt Germany in 1906 named Georg Knoss...but the spelling Georg would lend credence to him having been of Austrian descent.

It's not Greek, though. I've looked through all immigration records from Greece and there's nothing remotely close to it.
Reply:???

I find many of the name in the social security death index, some in rootsweb's files, and MANY in the indexes at familysearch.org.

Many in the 1880 census are misspelled as Noss. Other entries (church extractions) show up in Germany/Prussia, and other places as well.

If you are in the US, your preliminary steps would be birth and death certificates, then census records if the family was in the US by 1930. I am seeing that there are early Knoss families linked to PA (which could very well suggest Germany).

If you have an ancestor with some specific names and places in the US, you could try posting it here, and see what people can find. Many of the common genealogy sites rely strictly on submitted databases from other persons, and ignore indexes of original records.
Reply:sorry ,cant help you on that one.
Reply:i would agree with you. As I was reading this I was thinking of Knossos, it may very well be possible...for example my last name (Martin) is English.
