Actually it seems more like a surname (if used by Greek people today), so you cannot translate it.
It's a combination of Petra (Stone) and Aggelos (angel, messenger), so it means something like "stone angel". But it could also be interpreted as Petros (Peter) and Aggelos (Angel as a first name, not unusual in Greece), in a poetic context, or Peter and angel, or petra and Angel, it depends.
edit: To Lizzy: good attempt... Actually the name you mention is Vassilakis (nominative), Vassilaki (vocative), from Vassilios (greek masculine name). The suffix in this case is -akis and it has a diminutive value. The name, contrary to the greek misconception, doesn't mean Billy, but something like "little Regal". Vassilias means King in Greek.
Does anyone knows how is the name Petraggelos(greek name) in other languages???___plZzz___=)?
What did you want to know anyway? My opinion is that the name has such a form, either as a first or a last name, that you cannot translate it. You usually translate names to and from languages when there is something in common between them, for example religion or history. Report Abuse

Whats a good Mytholgy (greek) name for Goddess of Jewels?
I have to make up a name for my made up ruler of jewels so what do u think would be a good greek name?
Whats a good Mytholgy (greek) name for Goddess of Jewels?
Diamonica
Reply:I am terrible at making up names but this is the real Greek goddess of gems precious metals.
THEIA was the Titan goddess of sight and shining light of the clear blue sky. She was also, by extension, the goddess who endowed gold, silver and gems with their brilliance and intrinsic value.
Reply:Ploutos (or Plutus) was the Greek god of wealth and Plouto was a Greek nymph, also of wealth.
Making one up though I'd say Chrysafia from the modern Greek word for gold.
Reply:Aurum-goddes of jewels.
Reply:Margarites: its a Greek name derived from the word Margaron, which means Pearl
Reply:Jewleus-i.e. persUES and other endings like that.

Does the Greek Goddess Tethys have a Roman name?
I'm doing a project and it says to include both the Roman and Greek name for the Gods and Goddesses. I tried looking on the Internet, but I found no conclusive evidence that she had both a Roman name and a Greek name.
Help!
Does the Greek Goddess Tethys have a Roman name?
Teti and/or Tetide
Reply:I can't find it in my mythology books either, the closest I can find is under the name of the daughter of Oceanus and Tethys, or according to another report of Nereus and Doris, and may be compared to the sea goddes of the romans under these names: Salacia, Neverita, and Venilia. But maybe these names will guide you to the information you need.
Reply:I think she have the same name Teti..
Look here there is a table of name referring between Grece-Romans names http://www.sullacrestadellonda.it/mitolo... ..
Francis..Florence town -Italy
Reply:the correct name is Thetis . No any Roman name- Thetis mother of Achilles if it happens that you didn't know it

Reply:Many names of modern world have greek origin and are greek names that later changed their shape and had modified to those languages.
For example, male name Petros in greek means rock and you have it today in many countries: in England is Peter, in Spain Pedro, in Slavic countries Petar, etc.
Same as this one, names like George, Helen, Alexander, Jason, Sofia, Catherine, Nicole and many more are basically Greek because they mean something in Greek only.
You can check out here is your name on list:

Childrens name tattoo in Greek letters?
Hi there
My childrens names are "Nikolas" and "Sofia".
I am looking for a great font and the right spelling of these names in Greek for my first tattoo.
I was thinking of the names along with birth dates.
Or something that sympolices my Greek roots (my father was born in the island of Rhodes).
Any ideas ?
Childrens name tattoo in Greek letters?

watch for the finishing "s" on the s, alot of people mess up and use "蟽". How about a band or circle of greek key design with the names inside, or 2 little cherub designs but more like a greek god and a greek goddess, choose ones that represent the personalities of your children!
Reply:HAVE U TRIED.. GOOGLING IT.. C WOT U COME UP WITH..
I THINK ITS GREAT U WANNA HAV UR KIDS NAMES TATTOOED ON U..
IV GOT FOUR KIDS...BEEN THINKING DOIN IT AS WELL
Reply:Firstly, you need to know the name of the language to convert to. In this case it is Greek cyrillic (I am a self-confessed Grecophile, and love all things Greek!). Secondly, you need to convert English text to Greek cyrillic.
I'm sorry, I don't have the time to hunt it down for you, but I'm sure a search will come up with something for you.

Name of Greek king who killed his father and married his own mom?
Hi ,
I forget the name of the greeck ( micenean) king who was fortold his future by oracle that he will kill his father and will marry his own mom so he runs away to theabs or some thing where he killed a king there which he found out later was his own father . In the end poke his own eyes and kill himself . I need to know his name . Can any one help me.
Name of Greek king who killed his father and married his own mom?
Laius, Oedipus' father, kidnapped and raped the young boy Chrysippus and was then cursed by Chrysippus' father, Pelops. The weight of this curse bore down onto Oedipus himself. At his birth, it was prophesied that he would kill his father and marry his mother. Seeking to avoid such a fate, Laius had the infant's ankles pierced with nails and had him exposed (placed in the wilderness to die). His servant, however, betrayed him, handing the boy instead to a shepherd who presented the child to King Polybus and Queen Merope (or Periboea) of Corinth, who raised him as their own son.
At a party thrown by King Polybus, a drunk guest called Oedipus a bastard. Seeking to confirm his parentage, not believing the man, Oedipus sought out the Oracle. Instead of telling him his parentage, the Oracle related the same prophecy as was told to his father; that he would kill his father and marry his mother. After descending the mountain, he met on the road to the oracle an unarmed man, riding a chariot, on his own pilgrimage. The man in the chariot demanded that Oedipus stand aside so he could pass. They argued, and Oedipus killed the stranger. The man was King Laius, Oedipus' father.
Oedipus decided that the drunkard at the party was lying, and decided not to return to home in order to avoid Polybus. As he traveled, Oedipus encountered a mystical creature that was terrorizing Thebes. Oedipus saved the city by answering the riddle of the Sphinx ("What walks on four legs in the morning, two legs in the afternoon, and three legs in the evening?": Man, as a baby man crawls on four legs; as an adult, two legs; when old, man uses a cane.) and was rewarded with the now-vacant throne of Thebes and the widowed queen Jocasta's hand in marriage. In Sophocles' play, Oedipus Rex, Oedipus has four children with Jocasta, though this may have been a plot device he employed, as incest was not part of the original myth.
Within a short time, divine signs of misfortune and pollution began to appear in Thebes, which caused the king to seek out their cause. Finally, the seer Teiresias revealed to Oedipus that Oedipus himself was the source of the pollution. Oedipus discovered he was really the son of Laius and Jocasta and that the prophecy had indeed come to pass. Jocasta commited suicide and Oedipus blinded himself by forcing her brooch pins into his eyes.
It should be noted that the answer to the Sphinx's riddle applies to Oedipus more than any other man. As an infant with hobbled ankles, it is fair to assume he took much longer to learn to walk than normal. As a blind man in his old age, he required the use of a cane more than normal.
When Oedipus stepped down as King of Thebes, he gave the kingdom to his two sons, Eteocles and Polynices, who both agreed to alternate the throne every year. However, they showed no concern for their father, who cursed them for their negligence. After the first year, Eteocles refused to step down and Polynices attacked Thebes with his supporters (as portrayed in the Seven Against Thebes by Aeschylus and the Phoenician Women by Euripides). Both brothers died in the battle. King Creon, who ascended to the throne of Thebes, decreed that Polynices was not to be buried. Antigone, his sister, defied the order, but was caught. Creon decreed that she was to be buried alive, this in spite of her betrothal to his son Haemon. Antigone's sister, Ismene, then declared she had aided Antigone and wanted the same fate. The gods, through the blind prophet Teiresias, expressed their disapproval of Creon's decision, which convinced him to rescind his order, and he went to bury Polynices himself. However, Antigone had already hanged herself rather than be buried alive. When Creon arrived at the tomb where she was to be interred, Haemon attacked him and then killed himself. When Creon's wife, Eurydice, was informed of their deaths, she too took her own life.

It's a pretty sick story. Sigmund Freud even coined a term where a guy is hot for his mom....the Oedipus Complex.
Reply:Oedipus was the mythical king of Thebes, son of Laius and Jocasta, who, unknowingly, killed his father and married his mother. Greek poets explain the name (Greek 螣峒拔次€慰蠀蟼, transliterated directly as Oidipous) as meaning "swollen-foot," but this is probably a pun rather than an etymology; historically the name is more likely to have come from two elements meaning "he who knew (oid-) the Sphinx' riddle of the feet (-pous).
Reply:That greek king was called Edipus, who is one of the greatests works in old tragedies.
By the way, Can you choose me to have a best answer?

Reply:Uranaus is definately Greek. The opposite of Uranaus is Myanus which is sigular for Ouranus.
Reply:Greek name: Chronos Roman name: Uranus

How many children did the greek god, Ares, have and what were there name?
Attendants
Deimos and Phobos were his children by Aphrodite and were the spirit of terror and fear. The sister and companion of murderous Ares was Enyo, goddess of bloodshed and violence. The presence of Ares was accompanied by Kydoimos, the demon of the din of battle, as well as the Makhai (Battles), the Hysminai (Manslaughters), Polemos (a minor spirit of war; probably an epithet of Ares, as he had no specific dominion), and Polemos' daughter, Alala, goddess/personification of the Greek war-cry, whose name Ares used as his own war-cry.
Consorts and Children
There are accounts of a son of Ares, Cycnus (K媒knos) of Macedonia, who was so murderous that he attempted to build a temple with the skulls and the bones of travellers. Heracles slaughtered this abominable monstrosity, engendering the wrath of Ares, whom the hero wounded (Apollodorus 2.114).
Other consorts and children of Ares include:
Aglaulus
Alcippe
Aphrodite
Deimos (Dread)
Eros (in some sources)
Harmonia
Phobos (Fright)
Cyrene
Diomedes
Harpina (or Sterope, according to some accounts)

btw, Which one is your name and which a surname?
If Demetrius is your surname then in Greek it is Δημητρίου ( Demetriou ) %26gt; Πλατώνης Δημητρίου

Does anyone know what MY Greek name, "Thanatos", actually MEANS??? How about the Japanese name "Sessho"?
Doesn't it refer to death in Greek?
Reply:It means you need to get closer to God.
Reply:Thanatos = death wish. Freud discussed it in his writings.
Reply:For Thanantos:
In greek mythology he is the personification of death and mortality, son of Night and Darkness.
For Sessho:
In Japan, Sesshō (摂政) was a title given to a regent who was named to assist either a child emperor before his coming of age, or an empress.
Reply:Thanatos is the typical Greek word for death.
I did a very in depth study on the word because it's the name of the fourth horseman of the Apocalypse and I needed an avenue for additional insight.
My conclusion is that there isn't any. It means death plain and simple, and it is the most frequently used word to convey the idea of death. It never, Never, NEVER means anything else.

What do you think of this Greek name sib-set?
Demetria Athene
Lysander Demetrius
Julian Apollo
Penelope Cassandra
thanks! =)
What do you think of this Greek name sib-set?
Nothing stands out like a sore thumb, but since we're naming Greek, I would advise you to check the meanings. As a Christian, I wouldn't name my baby after a greek god or goddess.
How about Alethea (truth)?
TX Mom
Reply:I love Demetria, it's cute for a little girl, as well as sophisticated for an adult. Nickname-Demi? I like Athene too, but spelled Athena. I'm not such a big fan of Lysander, but Demetrius is nice too, very masculine. I like the name Julian, it's very cute. Apollo seems too much like a god, I think any kid would have a tough time having that name. Penelope is cute, and way underused. I'm not sure if people think that it's an old name, or that it's not sophisticated, but I think it's cute. I also like Cassandra, nickname-Cassie?
Good choices :)
Reply:The first three sound good, but I don't like the last combination. Although I love the sound of the name Penelope, it means "with a web over her face" and Cassandra means "she who entangles men". Maybe the meanings of names don't matter to you, but that is always something I check.
Btw, Apollo means 'destroyer.'
Good luck! :o)
Reply:I like Julian Apollo and Demetria Athene the best, though Penelope Cassandra is cute (I think I prefer it flipped around -- Cassandra Penelope). Not a huge fan of Lysander, Demetrius is okay though. =)

most of the men were seafarers and naturally found the womens appearance and odour offensive and repellent; consequently relations broke down between the men and women; the image and reputation of the women became legendary.

Why all the planets on our milkyway galaxy have Greek names?can u name your favorite planet name?
theater... gets it all wrong.
Here we go:
Mercury = Hermes
Venus = Aphrodite
Earth = no Greek name; it would be Gaia
Mars = Ares
Jupiter = Zeus
Saturn = Chronos
Uranus = Uranos
Neptune = Poseidon
Pluto = Pluton/ Hades
Thus the names on the left are Latin/ Roman, the ones on the left are Greek
I like the name 'Pluto' because it is at the farthest reaches of the solar system.

My top3: Pluto, Mars and Mercury.
Here we go:
Mercury = Hermes
Venus = Aphrodite
Earth = no Greek name; it would be Gaia
Mars = Ares
Jupiter = Zeus
Saturn = Chronos
Uranus = Uranos
Neptune = Poseidon
Pluto = Pluton/ Hades
Thus the names on the left are Latin/ Roman, the ones on the left are Greek
I like the name 'Pluto' because it is at the farthest reaches of the solar system.
Why all the planets on our milkyway galaxy have Greek names?can u name your favorite planet name?

In Greek mythology, what was the name of mortal that discovered fire?
This question has been nagging at my mind for days. I don't own an encyclopaedia of Greek %26amp; Roman mythology. I would like a summary outline of the Greek_mythology take on how fire was discovered. Thanks; cheers...
In Greek mythology, what was the name of mortal that discovered fire?
It was Prometheus, a Titan and God that gave fire to man. Promethius helped make all the animals and and man out of clay with the help of his brother Epemetheus.WHen it came time to give out gifts to all the creations to help them survive, Epimetheus gave generously giving fur, claws, wings swiftness etc. to all the animals. When Man came for his gift there was none left. Prometheus felt sorry for the weak frail, naked Man so he stole fire from the heavens and gave it to him. Zeus looked down and saw light at night and smelled the cooking from fire and he kenew Prometheus had been the culprit. He sentenced him to be chained to a rock for eternity. Every day, his liver was torn out and eaten by an eagle (or buzzard). But since Prometheus was a god it grew back every nigh only to be ripped out anew the next day. Therefore, Prometheus be be eternally punished.But, When Hercules came along he released Prometheus,who then went before Zeus to plead his case. He told Zeus that with fire, man could sacrifice to the gods and worship them. Zeus though this was good, but he had decreed that Prometheus be eternally bound by the chain. So he had Hepheases(spelled wrong I know) (Vulcan in Roman) forge prometheus a ring out of the chain to wear as a reminder of his disobediance.

When Zeus discovered this he called Prometheus to him and then with solid chains tied Prometheus to a rock face where a bird would eat his liver which would heal then he would eat it the next day, this went on for years and finally he was forgiven and was told he could leave but he asked to stay where he was but be he asked to be turned into stone so humans would remember him for all time,

Prometheus was the wisest Titan. His name means "forethought" and he was able to foretell the future. He was the son of Iapetus. When Zeus revolted against Cronus Prometheus deserted the other Titans and fought on Zeus side.
By some accounts he and his brother Epimetheus were delagated by Zeus to create man. In all accounts, Prometheus is known as the protector and benifactor of man. He gave mankind a number of gifts including fire. He also tricked Zeus into allowing man to keep the best part of the animals scarificed to the gods and to give the gods the worst parts.
For this Zeus punished Prometheus by having him chained to a rock with an eagle tearing at his liver. He was to be left there for all eternity or until he agreed to disclose to Zeus which of Zeus children would try to replace him. He was eventually rescued by Hercules without giving in to Zeus.

Zeus was said to be so nagered that for his punishment he was tied to a rock and an eagle was sent to peck out his liver. What's the name of the Greek (I think) goddess of the underworld who keeps the seas calm?
Our friends just named their new sailboat this name and we can't remember what it is, and want to send them a congrats card with the name on it. All we remember is that it begins with a "P."
What's the name of the Greek (I think) goddess of the underworld who keeps the seas calm?
I think you got the two Greek figures mixed up. Persephone is the Greek Goddess of the Underworld. Poseidon is the Greek God of the Sea who can calm the sea. When offended or ignored, he supposedly struck the ground with his trident and caused chaotic springs, earthquakes, drownings and shipwrecks.
Reply:I like you are thinking of Poseidon. There is also Triton too. But that was a god, not goddess.
Reply:It's Poseidon, Greek god of the sea. It's a 'he', and he doesn't live in the underworld (Hades), he lives in the ocean.
Reply:Amphitrite
Reply:You are probably thinking of Persephone, the goddess of the underworld. Although she didn't have any connection with the sea.
The Greek goddesses of the calm sea were Galene, Amphitrite, Cymodoce and Cymatolege.
Cyma was the ancient Greek word for "wave."
Reply:well actualy there is a norse goddess named Hel and she usualy caused mischief (having had Loki "inside" her) But she sometimes helped the vikings in legends.

Can someone help me name these characters from Greek mythology?
I consider myself as a bit of an expert on Greek mythology, but can't for the life of me remember certain names. Any help would be greatly appreciated. These are the names I need:
The king and his brother who found Danae in the tale of Medusa.
The guy who made a statue of Aphrodite and fell in love with it.
The Titans that created all life and were on the side of the gods.
I think that's it. But, if I remember more that I need, I will ask for them. Oh, and if they have Roman names as well (ie: Zeus/Jupiter) could you please put both? Thank you!
Can someone help me name these characters from Greek mythology?
The king and his brother who found Danae in the tale of Medusa.
-On the island of Seriphus, King Polydectes found Danae and her young son Perseus afloat in a chest. Polydectes fell in love with Danae but was rejected so for revenge he sent Perseus to obtain the head of Medusa. Dictys, the brother of Polydectes, did not like the way the King attempted to ravish Danae. When Perseus returned with the head, he used it to turn Polydectes to stone and gave the kingdom to Dictys.
The guy who made a statue of Aphrodite and fell in love with it.
-I think you mean Pygmalion, the sculptor who made a statue of a beautiful girl he named Galatea. Aphrodite/Venus brought the statue to life for Pygmalion.
The Titans that created all life and were on the side of the gods.
-Oceanus, Tethys, Hyperion, Thia, Crius, Eurybia (Mnemosyne), Coeus, Phoebe, Cronus, Rhea, Iapetus, and Themis
Reply:I am drawing a blank on the names, although you should be able to find them on www.encyclopediamythica.com.
The guy who made the statue did not make an image of Aphrodite, but of what he would consider the perfect woman physically. Venus (and only Venus, the myth does not exist in Greek myth) took pity on the sculptor and made it come to life.
The titans that created all life were not actually titans. Gaea was the creator of all life, and the mother of the titans and sided with Zeus. Rhea, her daughter and a titan, allowed the rebellion to begin. I do not think those two names have Roman counterparts.

What is the Greek or Roman name for the constallation The Big Dipper?
first person to answer gets 10 points!!!!!!!!!
What is the Greek or Roman name for the constallation The Big Dipper?
The Big Dipper is actually just a part of the constellation Ursa Major (the Great Bear) used by the Greeks and Romans.
Reply:Orions belt
Reply:Ersa Major
Reply:The big dipper itself is not a constellation technically, it is an asterism that is part of the Ursa Major (the Great Bear) constellation. The seven brightest stars, located in the Bear's hindquarters and tail, form the well-known Big Dipper asterism. (In Britain, this asterism is known as the Plough.)
The constellation of Ursa Major has been seen by many distinct civilizations as a bear. In one sequence, together with the nearby Ursa Minor, it formed the basis of the myth of Callisto.
In earlier times, Greek mythology did not consider Ursa Major a bear, and instead its 3 bright stars (situated in the tail) were seen as apples growing on a tree (sometimes represented by the fainter stars in the remainder of the constellation). At the same time, the stars of Ursa Minor were associated with the Hesperides.
One of the few star groups mentioned in the Bible (Job 9:9; 38:32 鈥?Orion and the Pleiades being others), Ursa Major was also pictured as a bear by both the Hebrews and most North American peoples. However, as bears do not have long tails, they considered Alioth, Mizar, and Alkaid to be either three cubs following their mother or three hunters.
Reply:Ursa Major,The Great Bear
Reply:Ursa Major includes the Big Dipper and some other stars that looked like a "Great Bear" to the ancients.
The Big Dipper itself was not always considered separately.

Reply:Ancestry.Com shows 1 Gripioti on the 1920 census from Greece. Actually, they show it two ways the other way was Fripioti. I might add that the Gripoti on the census was a sister-in-law to the head of household. She could have been Greek but married to an Italian.
Now, surnames frequently can come from more than one nationality. If this is your family name, the best thing to do is to trace your family.
The link below won't given you any information on the name but it is about peddlers of surname products. I think the public needs to be educated about that.

Some names that are Ukrainian look Russian, but I'd laugh anyone out of the room that thought my surname was anything but Russian. Gripioti is probably Greek, as the previous poster(s) mentioned, but it's best to look at your family history. If you have any trace of Greek in you, that's probably where it came from, or if there's a Greek in your family from too far back for anyone to recall. Trace who brought the name into the family and look up their nationality.
Gripioti is it Italian or Greek last name?
gripioti is a greek female last name. for a man it would have been gripiotis. in greek its 纬蟻喂蟺喂蠅蟿畏蟼
Reply:definatly italion i HAVE
alot of italian in me i would know!!!

What is the name of the Greek wine that has been treated with Pine Tree Resin?
You're thinking of retsina.
Retsina is a Greek resinated white (or ros茅) wine that has been made for at least 2700 years.
Its unique flavor is said to have originated from the practice of sealing wine vessels, particularly amphora, with pine resin in ancient times. Before the invention of impermeable glass bottles, oxygen caused many wines to spoil within the year. Pine resin helped keep air out, while at the same time infusing the wine with resin aroma. In time the practice of adding resin to the fermenting must have flavored the wine even more strongly, and apparently kept it better preserved.

One of the sports of the original Greek Olympics is returning to the games in Beijing 2008. Can you name it?
The original sport still exists as the Greek rules and is the foundation of many a discipline like the sport today. In Beijing 2008 the sport will be in Chinese rules very similar to the Greek. The Chinese sport in fact has origins from the ancient Greek art. The sport is considered a platform to one of the most popular and well paid international professional sports. The Chinese follow it religiously and the Yakuza owns the rights of the professional code.

When you say the original Greek Olympics then you must mean the Ancient Olympic Games.
I'm going to say the sport your talking about is Pankration as it was in the Ancient Games and is a combat sport that originated in Greece. Yes this sport is very similar to today's Mixed Martial Arts in that it combines Grappling, Boxing and Wrestling. Today it also incorporates styles of Karate, Judo, Jiu-Jitsu and Tae Kwon DO.
Your jumping the gun on it returning to the Olympics as Pankration was allowed to be a Demonstration Sport Exhibition status at the 2004 games I couln't find anything for 2008. Good news was in 2007 Pankration joined FILA- Olympic governing body for Wrestling and could someday be a part of the Olympics as a discipline of Wrestling. Since 1995 Greek Sports ministry has been trying to this sport back to the Olympics.

Name of the artist who draws in pastels or watercolor, pictures of greek paradises? Popular during hippie era.
The pictures are usually of beautiful greek women in paradise lounging on marble benches beneath greacian pillars. His work may have been in pastels but the colors are very soft and peaceful. I am at a loss as to what his name is and I need it for a novel I am writing. Thank you.
Name of the artist who draws in pastels or watercolor, pictures of greek paradises? Popular during hippie era.
My friend, you are talking about a turn of the century American artist named Maxfield Parrish. He painted oils on canvas and worked with watercolor to do illustrations for magazines. It was his magazine illustrations that brought him fame starting in the 1920s. He was extremely popular to the 'Flappers' from the Roaring 20s. Then the counter-culture hippies re-discovered him and his art and made it popular again. The cartoonist who created 'Bloom County' further increased the new interest in Parrish's artwork by using it as backdrops for the dream fantasies of Opus.

How do you pronounce the Greek name Chrysander?
Chrysander is not a typical Greek name.
1. It is derived from two words : χρυσός = gold ( male name Χρύσης ) and άντρας = man. Means 'a golden mαn'
2. It was derived from Christos and Andreas
Pronounced as chrees-αh-n-der ( in Greek it would be Chrysandros = Χρύσανδρος ), stress on 'ee'

Ok, i'm not really sure about what you mean but here are my thoughts:

2)You may also mean this:http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dardan

Dardanos was the founder of Troy.

So Dardane would be the feminine and mean a female Trojan.

How would i spell my name in greek?my name is Hunter,?
Well if I wrote it down the way I hear it,it would be written as "Χάντερ" and it would be pronounced as:
Χάντ ----%26gt;as the word "hunt"
ερ ------%26gt; as the "err" from the word "error"
But your name has an actual meaning in Greek which is the "person who hunts" and if we translate that it would be written as "Κυνηγός" and it would be pronounced as
Κυ ------%26gt;as the "kee" from the word keep
νη ------%26gt;as the "ne" from the word "neon
γός -----%26gt;as the "gos" from the word "gossip"
How would i spell my name in greek?my name is Hunter,?
Translate any word or letter with the source below:
Hunter = κυνηγός
English to Greek
:)
Reply:I don't know about the translator - it is probably the meaning of the word 'hunter', but if you want to identify Greek symbols with letters in Latin alphabet it would be: Ηθντερ (letter for letter). You can figure out any word like this if you add Greek keyboard in regional and language options on your pc and then type the word on your keyboard ;)

I am trying to figure out a character's name from Greek mythology?
So the guy I'm thinking about is the guy that was told not to look back
at the girl running behind him (his wife he rescued or something), and if he did she would disappear forever. The guy turns back and she's gone.
The name is on the tip of my tongue but I can't figure it out!

I am trying to figure out a character's name from Greek mythology?
He's Orpheus. His wife is Eurydice.
Reply:The above answers are correct.
I thought I would enclose a link to mythography
http://www.loggia.com/myth/index.html
Here is the story of Orpheus,
The musician descends to the dark Underworld and begs Hades to release his wife Eurydice from the realm of the dead. After explaining how his young bride was accidentally killed, Orpheus uses his powers as a musician to persuade Hades to let him bring Eurydice back to the land of the living. The god of the Underworld agrees to the request, with one condition - Orpheus must not look upon Eurydice until they both reach the surface of the earth. However, the enthusiastic bard forgets this warning and glances at his lovely wife just before they are free of the Underworld. At this moment, Orpheus once again loses his wife.
The story now takes an even more tragic turn. After losing Eurydice for a second time, Orpheus wanders the earth in despair. The musician loved his wife desperately, and wants nothing to do with women. A group of Thracian Maenads, however, take revenge on Orpheus and tear him to pieces. But there is a poetic note to this sad ending. It is said that even after his death, the head of Orpheus floated down the Hebrus river, singing a beautiful and enchanting song of lost love.
Reply:Yes you do know the right story and his name is Orpheus and his wifes name is Eurydice.

I found this on Ian:
IAN
Gender: Masculine
Usage: Scottish, English
Pronounced: EE-an
Modern Scottish form of JOHN
JOHN
Gender: Masculine
Usage: English, Biblical
Pronounced: JAHN
English form of Iohannes, which was the Latin form of the Greek name 螜蠅伪谓谓畏蟼 (Ioannes), itself derived from the Hebrew name 讬讜止讞指谞指谉 (Yochanan) meaning "YAHWEH is gracious". This name owes its consistent popularity to two New Testament characters, both highly revered as saints. The first was John the Baptist, the forerunner of Jesus Christ and a victim of beheading by Herod Antipas. The second was the apostle John, also supposedly the author of the fourth Gospel and Revelation. The name has been borne by 23 popes and eight Byzantine emperors, as well as kings of England, France, Sweden, Denmark, Poland, Portugal and Hungary. It was also borne by the poet John Milton and the philosopher John Locke.
Reply:I found much the same but there is a possible connection to Ian God of Hades.
Reply:Ian is the Irish (Gaelic) form of John
Reply:Yes. Ian Flemming, the god of spies.
Reply:Ian (First Name Origin and Meaning)
Scottish 路 Male
God is gracious.
Reply:You can shorten any name that is long if you want. There is no correct way to do it. Interestingly, I was not able to find this name in yahoo search engine. At all. If no one can pronounce it correctly then they shortened it to make it easier.
Reply:Didn't find any Ians except for the Irish/Scottish name for John in the God's list
Reply:I looked here and could find nothing on Ian as being linked to Greek gods

I am looking for a greek last name that starts with a p i believe it is poppiocoulos?
That's a strange name for a Greek. Think maybe it could be Papanicolis?
I am looking for a greek last name that starts with a p i believe it is poppiocoulos?
It's definitely not "poppiocoulos" that is not a Greek name, in matter of fact it isn't a name at all.
Do you maybe mean Pappadopoulos?
That is the closest Greek name there is to that, so I think that should be it, it's also a very common name in Greece! :)
Reply:Well that's not a greek name at all. Maybe you mean:
Photiopoulos OR Photopoulos
Papadopoulos
Peristeropoulos
Panagopoulos
Papagiannopoulos

I don't quite understand your question. As far as I know, Egyptian farmers and a Greek farmer did not win the Peloponnesian War.
Here is a link on the war:

It looks like Sparta won. Sparta was an area in Greece. They fought agains Athens, another area in Greece.

I don't know what time period in Egypt you need information about. This MIGHT help...

There was a farming culture that started, which was called the Naqada culture.

I don't know the name of the battle, but it looks like the body of water was the Hellespont strait.
Not sure about the school of Greek philosophy you are looking for, but maybe they talk about it here:

Good luck with your test.
Reply:Sparta won the war
In 405 Lysander took his navy northward to the Hellespont (now called the Dardanelles) to cut off Athens from its vital grain supply lines to the Euxine (now called the Black) Sea. Lysander made a surprise attack on the Athenian ships at Aegospotami while the crews were dispersed on land. All but nine of the Athenian ships were lost, and several thousand Athenians and their allies were slain. Peace was signed in the spring of 404. Sparta won the war and imposed humiliating terms on Athens. The city walls were to be torn down; the fortifications of its port, the Piraeus, were to be destroyed; and all but 12 warships were to be surrendered. Athens was henceforth to be a Spartan ally and to follow the same foreign policy.
Reply:Not sure about the farmers, and I don't believe any Egyptians were present, but the Greeks won the war, led by the Spartans. The naval battle was at Salamis, and I believe you are referring to the Socratic school.

I can't figure out the correct spelling of a Italian or Greek last name - can you help?
The name is either...
Dicicomino/a
Dicisomino/a
Do you know which one it is, and is it an 'o' or an 'a'? Or are these spellings incorrect and it's spelled different?
What happened is that it's a name I wrote down for a thank you note, but now I can't read my own handwriting!

What is the greek name for the goddess of death?
I couldn't find the goddess so I am not sure if there is one but I found the God if that helps?
The God is Thanatos.
In Greek mythology, Thanatos was the Daemon personification of Death and Mortality. He was a minor figure in Greek mythology, often referred to but rarely appearing in person. His name is transliterated in Latin as Thanatus, but his Roman equivalent was Mors or Letus/Letum, and he was sometimes identified (perhaps erroneously) with Orcus.
Goddesses of death I got Hecate, Persephone, Demeter. Hope I helped!
What is the greek name for the goddess of death?
There is no Greek goddess of death per se.
The Greek god of death (dying) is Thanatos.
The God of the underworld, the land of the dead, is Hades, and his queen and thus goddess of the underworld, is Persephone.
In "the Sandman", the name of the universal manifestation of Death is given as 'Teleute' when she visits a wedding in ancient Greece, however I do not know whether this was made up for the story.
Reply:Thanatos was the God of Death.
Persephone was Queen of the Underworld, and the wife of Hades.
Morgan is a Celtic Goddess, not Greek.
Reply:morgan?

How do I find out if my fiance's last name is Greek or other?
What is it called when you wanna do research on some1's last name to see what kind it is, like Greek, Irish..etc.?
How do I find out if my fiance's last name is Greek or other?
It's called taking a shortcut that might give you a false answer.
Looking at the etymology of a name in the US or Canada is very misleading. Through the years, our names have mutated from what they were when our ancestors lived in Europe. If you go to some of the "name sites" and just type in a name, you may get an answer, but the odds of that answer being true to the origins of your own name are slim. A few days ago there was a good example of it on this board. Someone asked for the origins of the name "Huise". A simple question...and all of the "name sites" claimed it was British. AHHHH...but then we went to the records of people with that name who immigrated to the US and found they were actually Norwegian, German, and many other nationalities. The name belongs to many ethnic groups, but the "name sites" just picked one nationality and claimed everyone with that name was British....though clearly not true.
If you really want to find out the ethnicity of your boyfriend's name, then do the genealogy research to figure out what his immigrant ancestor's nationality was, where he was born, when he left, etc. That will give you the real answer...and give you something to pass along to your children that has real meaning.
Stay away from any site that tries to sell you "things" with coats of arms or family crests. They had to make things up in order to get you to but those honors. If you want to spend money on something fake when the truth may be much more fascinating, go ahead. But it's purely caveat emptor.
Reply:look up surname origins or try babynames.com this will sometimes say what the origin of your surname is.

I want to know the name of the famous ancient greek soldier who is considered as "Our Father" by the Greeks ?
Someone told me that the Greeks have a Hero, in fact a soldier of Ancient Greece, who is considered as" the Father" of the Greek nation.
Is it true or is it just a legend?
And who is it?
I thought it was Alexander, but some guys told me that it was another one, and they don't remember exactly the name .
I want to know the name of the famous ancient greek soldier who is considered as "Our Father" by the Greeks ?
Many historical and mythological figures of the ancient Greece can be considered as "fathers" of the Greeks. Each one is attributed with a special characteristic that was unique for the person.
Hercules for his mighty strength. He even was supposed to have fought bare-handed with lions among other vicious animals. For that he was depicted on the coat-of-arms of the former of the royal family.
Odysseus (Ulysses), for his cunning and strategic abilities. Inventor of the Trojan Horse.
Achilles, for being undefeated and considered a semi-god as being the son of a goddess.He had the his Achilles heel, though.
Leonidas, for being attributed to be a fearless warrior who stood his ground and fallen among his few men, and that by treachery. The "this Sparta "man.
However, the mightiest of them all is considered Alexander the Great, who using his bravery and cunning expanded the Greek culture as far East as China and all over the North Africa region. There are people on those regions considered to be direct descendants of his men.
I believe the title can go to him. That is why he is so much exploited by our neighbors who being historically deprived want to have a figure to show as theirs.
But Alexander was more Greek than anyone else and the archaeological findings prove that beyond doubt.
Reply:I suppose this father figure was actually an allegory, wasn't it?...
I don't think that the modern Greeks still believe in their fascinating mythology...
Reply:It might be Hercules! I´m actually pretty sure it was him!
Reply:I tottaly agree with Alexlascari. Zeus was considered by Greeks (and Romans) as the father of their (our) nation.
Original quote:
«πατήρ θεών τε ανδρών τε»
"Father of Gods and Men"
As for Romans, Jupiter comes from the words Deus-Pater which mean Father - God.
Reply:The father of the Greek Nation is not a common soldier but Zeus (Jupiter) himself.
There is the relative ancient Greek quote about him: "Father of Gods and Humans".
Meaning that we Greeks are made of the same substance with Gods.
