Helot (which is the Greek [primarily Spartan] term for people that were, essentially, serfs).

A serf, maybe.
Reply:a vassal? but they werent necesarily forced....
Reply:Helots. They made up most of the population of Sparta, which is why that city state based the government on armies to stop the helots from revolting. Some people on top of me are assuming you are talking about the middle ages.
Reply:Serf - A peasant would sell their land to a Lord in order to provide food and protection for their family. Then they were forced to work the land to pay off the debt.
